Microteaching Testing
Microteaching Testing is offered several times per year.
January, June, August: Newly Admitted Students and/or first time microteaching test takers.
November, April: Current UConn Students, including students who need to be screened after completing an English course or submitting an updated and improved TOEFL, LCA, or IELTS test scores.
The microteaching test provides a dynamic and interactive means of assessing a prospective ITAs’ classroom English proficiency. The test consists of a three-minute presentation and three minutes for questions from a panel of undergraduates, an ITA course instructor and in some cases, members of the student’s academic department. Students should plan to explain their topic without the use of a whiteboard or visual aid (3-minutes is not enough time for that). The 3-minute question and answer period will be followed by a 5-10 minute interview. All interview questions are considered general knowledge questions.
Testing Fee: Fee will be waived for newly admitted students for their first microteaching test, $45 fee for students who need to be re-screened after not passing the first test.

Registration
The Microteaching Test registration form will be available one month prior to the test date. When registering, students must provide proof of a department offer for a Teaching Assistantship for the upcoming semester, as well as the topic they plan to present. A final confirmation email will be sent 2-3 days before the test.
Before completing the registration form, please ensure you are eligible for the test. If you are unsure, contact ITA services for clarification.
Testing Format
Testing will be available both in-person and online. For online testing, ITA Services will use Zoom, a video and conference communication tool, to meet with students. Students will need a Windows or Apple computer with speakers, a microphone, and a working camera. It is recommended to use the Zoom app for the best experience. Please note that the whiteboard feature in Zoom will not be allowed. Detailed information regarding in-person and online testing requirements will be provided to students upon registration.
Cancellations
If a student cancels or does not show up for a test after the final confirmation for the test has already been sent, the test result will be considered a “fail”. After a failing result, a student may register to take the microteaching test again only after successfully completing an English course or submitting a new and improved TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test scores.
Students enrolled in an ITA course will take the Microteaching Test as part of that course’s final exam. If a student does not show up for the Microteaching Test at the end of the course, it will be considered a Fail.
Results
Students will be emailed microteaching results up to one week following the test. The department contact will be copied on the results email. If the student does not demonstrate the minimum proficiency to teach undergraduate students, a language support course will be recommended. After completing the course, the student must retake the test.
